The Department of Nutritional Sciences Community Engagement Program offers enrichment for both the community and our undergraduate students by connecting students with community partners to provide nutrition education and participate in nutrition related events. This service is offered free of charge.
Students participating in community engagement work closely with a faculty supervisor to develop curriculum or materials for each experience. The engagement program also partners with Texas Nutrition; the nutrition undergraduate student organization dedicated to providing opportunities for professional and academic growth. Texas Nutrition is highly active in the community and hosts a number of events throughout the school year, available on the events calendar. Students are available to assist with community events that are designed to promote healthy eating and sustainability such as health fares, gardening events, summer camps, etc. Students and faculty are also available to provide up to 1-hour talks on a variety of subjects.
Topics for talks include:
- Label reading and menu planning
- Maintaining a healthy weight with balanced nutrition
- You are what you eat, the basics of nutrition
- Healthy food selections for the busy adult
- Facts and fiction about current fad diets
- Grocery shopping and menu planning
- Label reading and using the USDA MyPlate tools
- Nutrition and aging
- Heart healthy diet, the role of sodium and fatty acids
- Nutrition on a budget, getting the most bang for your buck
