Honoring Visiting Professor Iris Apfel

This year, the College of Natural Sciences (CNS) honored Iris Apfel with the Distinguished Service Award for her mentoring and teaching School of Human Ecology undergraduates.

The award was presented to her proxy, Martha Ferguson, at the annual Hall of Honor event that celebrates the friends and alumni of CNS who have shown support for the college and who have brought distinction to themselves.

Iris Apfel has been a part of the School of Human Ecology since 2011 when she became a visiting professor in the Textiles & Apparel Division.

Each May she leads the UT in NYC program with faculty members Nancy Prideaux and Sara Stewart Stevens.  For this program, students apply to spend a week in the fashion capitol, simultaneously earning class credit and visiting with industry leaders.

The key to the success of UT in NYC is Apfel's knowledge, experience and matchless little black book.  Apfel opens doors that even fashion-industry executives can't swing; in the summer of 2016, students visited the headquarters of, among others, J. Crew creative director Jenna Lyons, Tommy Hilfiger and Naeem Khan.

The most recent UT in NYC class was profiled in The Alcalde.
