UT in NYC is an innovative experiential learning program in the School of Human Ecology for upper division students in the Division of Textiles and Apparel. This program is like none other in the country because it is led by legendary New York City fashion icon and visiting professor Iris Apfel. Professor Apfel and Textile and Apparel faculty members have designed a world-class program to provide our students with extraordinary examples of the industry’s brightest and most successful leaders in the overall fashion arena.
Professor Apfel generously calls on her close relationships, developed through a lifetime of professional and creative pursuits, for the benefit of her UT in NYC students. They are invited into boardrooms, workrooms, showrooms and curatorial spaces, where they learn how professor Apfel’s colleagues have built their careers. In the process, the students’ eyes are opened to the many possibilities that await them upon graduation. Inspired by these stories, they learn that with the right combination of passion and commitment, they, too, can make their mark on the industry.
Site visits represent the full spectrum of the fashion industry: production, publishing, licensing, visual merchandising, buying, forecasting, design, sourcing and fashion public relations including stops at Kate Spade, Bergdorf Goodman, The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Phillips Van Heusen, Anna Sui and HSN to name a few.
UT in NYC is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to experience the fashion industry from those who are accomplished, established, and quite frankly, famous.
Students are saying:
"The UT in NYC program was by far the most eye-opening experience I have ever had in my educational career. Not only was every visit enlightening in it’s own way, the whole trip connected so many concepts together in a way that made so much sense. Each visit helped me clarify what I want and do not want to do in my career. So many of our speakers said you have to know what you stand for and go out and do what you love and the answers will come."
