Mayor of Austin Recognizes Champion for Child Development

Austin Mayor Steve Adler has proclaimed June 15, 2016 Priscilla Pond Flawn Day in honor of the longtime friend of the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences, who passed away this spring.

Priscilla Pond Flawn (1926-2016) is being recognized for “a lifetime dedicated to the education and development of young children” and “service to community organizations for children and families.”  Her efforts on behalf of the University of Texas at Austin are also noted on the proclamation, from establishing professorships in child development and early childhood education to working for the Priscilla Pond Flawn Laboratory School.

According to a press release the University issued in April:

Mrs. Flawn had a lifelong interest in the education of young children. For 14 years, she was teacher and head teacher at Good Shepherd School in Austin. She was a founding member of the Austin Association for the Education of Young Children and served on the Austin Child Care Council, the editorial board of the syndicated Child Care Column carried by the Austin American-Statesman and the Parents as Teachers Committee of the Mental Health Association of Texas. … In 2005, she was honored by The Austin Project with its Lifetime Achievement Award for her advocacy to improve education and the quality of life for young children.
