Melissa Harrell, PhD | UTHealth Houston School of Public Health | Dr. Melissa Blythe Harrell is a Professor at the UT Health School of Public Health in Austin. Her research interests focus on tobacco use among youth and young adults. A behavioral epidemiologist by training, Dr. Harrell has served as a senior writer and editor of three Surgeon General’s Reports and an Institute of Medicine Report on this topic, and she has over 125 peer-reviewed publications. To date, she has been a leading investigator on 13 federally funded grants from NIH and CDC, totaling more than $35 million. She has served as faculty of UT Health since 2006, with appointments in the Departments of Epidemiology, Human Genetics, and Environmental Sciences and the Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Harrell’s extensive research portfolio includes behavioral surveillance and intervention studies both in Texas and international settings (e.g., Uruguay, India, Africa).
