Historic Gearing Hall
True giants in the fields of child development, nutritional science, public and community health, as well as textiles, apparel design and merchandising, have walked through the halls and picturesque courtyard of Gearing Hall.
Following in the paths of other big thinkers whose ideas have helped influence our everyday lives, students and researchers use this space to dive into the science at the crux of our human experiences. For Longhorns, that means getting real through experiential learning in Gearing Hall—in laboratories, research, internships and projects—with ideas that matter.
Priscilla Pond Flawn Child and Family Laboratory
The Priscilla Pond Flawn Child and Family Laboratory is a training and research facility at the University of Texas at Austin that serves children 18 months to 6 years old. Our programs support children’s growth and development so that each child’s self-esteem is strengthened. The lab is sponsored by the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) in the School of Human Ecology. The lab is an educational, research, and service facility for university students, faculty and the community at large.
Susie Jastrow Teaching Kitchen
The Susie Jastrow Teaching Kitchen was established in Gearing Hall by UT Alumna Susan Thomas Jastrow, and hosts nutrition and fitness camps for youths ages 9 to 17. The week-long summer programs give young community members an opportunity to learn about healthy, nutritious food and how to prepare it.
IRIS The Coloring Book
Honor the legacy of the late style icon and revered educator, Iris Apfel, by embracing a piece of history with “IRIS The Coloring Book”. As a Visiting Professor at The University of Texas at Austin, Iris Apfel left an indelible mark on the Textiles and Apparel Program, inspiring students with her unique vision and passion for fashion since 2010.
For a decade, the UT in NYC Seminar and Conference flourished under her guidance, offering students unparalleled access to the fashion industry through her extensive network. Iris's legacy will continue as UT prepares students with exposure to leading designers, merchants, and retailers, gaining insight into the diverse career paths within the NYC fashion space.
"IRIS The Coloring Book" stands as a testament to her dedication and love for the UT community as the world’s only coloring book with Iris’ seal of approval. This passion project helps fund students' educational journeys with fashion in Manhattan. Conceived as a fundraiser, the book's proceeds are dedicated to supporting students, brought to life by a devoted team in Austin committed to preserving Iris's exceptional legacy.
