Dr. Fatima Varner Joins HDFS Faculty

20160302 002w Varner FatimaDr. Fatima Varner joined the faculty of the Human Development and Family Sciences department in January 2016 as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Varner is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Ph.D. program in Human Development and Social Policy, and she received her bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University. She also was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Center for the Study of Black Youth in Context at the University of Michigan. She is coming to the University of Texas at Austin after servingas an AssistantProfessor at Fordham University.

Dr. Varner’s major research interests include the roles of ethnicity, gender, and context on parenting, family processes, and adolescent outcomes. The majority of her work has explored the contributions of familial factors to African American adolescents’ academic achievement. She is especially interested in the pathways through which racial discrimination influences parenting and adolescents’ academic achievement in African American families.
