Dr. Alejandra De Angulo is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Texas at Austin. Dr. De Angulo has a PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. De Angulo's research expertise includes investigating the role of immunological changes associated with obesity and aging. Dr. De Angulo’s dissertation work addressed the relationship between aging, inflammation and prostate cancer progression. Dr. De Angulo’s research demonstrated that age-related alterations in T cells have a negative impact on prostate cancer progression.

As a postdoctoral fellow, Dr. De Angulo worked on a project to better understand the development of adipose tissue and its changes during obesity. Dr. De Angulo studied a transcription factor called PU.1 and the role that it plays in regulating adipocyte function. PU.1 is a transcription factor that is increased by obesity in visceral adipose tissue. Data from Dr. De Angulo’s work demonstrated that PU.1 up-regulates the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines to suppress insulin signaling.

Additional results from Dr. De Angulo’s studies revealed that the expression levels of key thermogenic genes are upregulated in brown adipose tissue and subcutaneous inguinal white adipose tissue from mice with adipocyte-specific knockout of PU.1. Results from these studies suggest that PU.1 might play a key role in the development of obesity and insulin resistance by promoting adipocyte inflammation and inhibiting adipocyte thermogenesis.

Currently, Dr. De Angulo is working on project to identify specific obesity-related immunological defects that contribute to cancer progression and resistance to treatment. The overall goal of these studies is to develop effective therapies for cancer patients that also have obesity.
