Program Overview

The Priscilla Pond Flawn Child and Family Laboratory at The University of Texas at Austin is a part of the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) in the School of Human Ecology.

Licensed by the State of Texas and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the Child and Family Laboratory provides a high quality early childhood experience to children ages 18 months through 6 years of age.  In partnership with HDFS, the Child and Family Laboratory provides educational and training opportunities for our University students through observation and interaction in the classrooms and supports research in human development and family relationships. We also serve as a model of best practice in early care and child growth and development through advocacy and outreach.

Program Philosophy

Our play-based and hands-on discovery oriented program is designed to meet the individual needs of the children and reflect their emerging interests while supporting their mastery of new abilities.  Children develop self-esteem, self-control and the skills to become effective problem-solvers through developmentally appropriate activities designed to enhance the basic processes necessary for learning.

Program Options

The Child and Family Laboratory follows The University of Texas academic schedule and is in session only when the University is open and holding classes.  No children attend the Child and Family Laboratory on Fridays.  On Fridays the Master Teachers and staff work with the University students to reflect on their learning experiences and to plan and prepare for the children’s upcoming week.
